Love and White Doves in the Philippines

Doves mate for life, another reason why doves
are associated with love and marriage.
Across many countries, doves are often associated with weddings. Doves are a universal sign of both love and peace so it isn't surprising that several cultures and religions use them for weddings. Even ancient people used associated them with goddesses of love dating back to even before 1300 B.C. The Aztec people worshipped Xochiquetzal, their goddess of love and the mother of humanity who took the form of a dove and gifted the world the power of speech. Aphrodite's temples had many statues of doves and were considered sacred to her. It was even said that her chariot was pulled by doves. In both Judaism and Christianity white doves are used many times to symbolize peace and the spirit of God.

Dozens of festivals and dances take place
all over the country.
The Philippines are an island nation and their county consists of over 7,000 islands. It's no wonder they have a vibrantly rich culture that is filled with many traditions. The islands were massive trade hubs; which gave them a wide variety of complex lifestyles. Many of which are still followed today. Influence comes not only from thousands of years of tribal history but also Spanish, American, and other Asian cultures. Brides usually wear white dresses, a European custom that carried over, but some brides choose a white Baro't saya (the national dress of the Philippines woven from pineapple plant fiber).

Historically speaking Filipino weddings lasted three days and while couples are taking a more modern approach these days, it doesn't mean that they aren't still honouring their customs. Even Filipino communities

living away from the islands still follow certain traditions. It's still pretty common for a newlywed couple to release a pair of white doves at their reception. The bride and groom either release a male and female dove from a decorative cage or release them by hand. This symbolizes the harmony that will hopefully bless their marriage.
